How to Convert Hexadecimal to Decimal will show you the importance of Hex especially when it comes to understand how MAC and IPv6 Addressing System structured. Note that Ethernet MAC Addressing System which is 48bit Hexadecimal numbers, and IPv6 is 128bit Hexadecimal numbers Addressing System all based on Hex, hence, Hexadecimal conversion would be more fun! It’s interesting to know that Base 10 and 2 was not enough for the some computer needs, therefore, base 16 filled the gap.
Converting Hexadecimal to Decimal
E.g. convert F9 Hex to Decimal
Step 1: write down the Hex chart on a piece of paper. We need to flip F to 15 since we are going to Multiply F value which is 15 by 16.
256 16 1 0 15 9
Step 3: Multiply Units by its Place: 15 units x 16 = 240 + 9 units = 249
Therefore, F9 equal to 249 decimal.
Convert A0 Hexadecimal to Decimal
Step 1: write down the Hex chart. Flip alphabets to decimal digits then plug all of them in the chart.
16 1 10 0
Step 2: Multiply units by its place: 10×16=160 + 0 = 160
Therefore, A0 Hex equal to 160 in decimal.
Convert 87 Hexadecimal to Decimal
Note: is not always necessary that Hex number include Alphabets.
Step 1: write down the Hex chart and plug the numbers starting from the right.
16 1 8 7
Step 2: Multiply units by its place: 16 x 8 = 128 + 7 = 135
Therefore, 87 Hex equal to 135 decimal.
Convert 288 Hexadecimal to decimal
Step 1: write down the Hex chart and plug the numbers starting from the right.
256 16 1 2 8 8
Step 2: Multiply units by its place: (2 x 256 = 512) + (8 x 16 = 128) + 8 = 648
Therefore, 288 Hex equal to 648 decimal.
Convert 12DC Hexadecimal to Decimal
Step 1: write down the Hex chart. Flip alphabets to decimal digits then plug all of them in the chart.
4096 256 16 1 1 2 13 12
Step 2: Multiply units by its place: 4096 + (256 x 2 = 512) + (13 x 16 = 208) + 12 = 4828
Therefore, 12DC Hex equal to 4828 decimal.
Hex to Decimal and Binary Chart
After this practice, you should be able to know by heart all Hex value in decimal from 0 up to F, and Hex value in binary from 0000 up to 1111.
- 0 = 0000
- 1 = 0001
- 2 = 0010
- 3 = 0011
- 4 = 0100
- 5 = 0101
- 6 = 0110
- 7 = 0111
- 8 = 1000
- 9 = 1001
- 10 = 1010 = A
- 11 = 1011 = B
- 12 = 1100 = C
- 13 = 1101 = D
- 14 = 1110 = E
- 15 = 1111 = F
